Research continues to inform us that keyboarding remains an essential skill for students in today’s schools. The facts that our school district has instituted a 1:1 mobile computing initiative at our middle and high schools and the typing requirements of the new online testing protocols that our state has adopted for the 2014-15 school year, have led us to recognize that good keyboarding skills are more important than ever to the success of our students.
Research again informs us that children learn keyboarding best when given the opportunity to practice three to five times per week for 15-20 minutes. This school year students in grades 2-5 will have time set aside during their weekly computer lab related arts to learn and practice keyboarding. During this computer lab time, students will be trained in the fundamentals of good keyboarding and given some time to practice. However, we realize that this once weekly time needs to be supplemented with practice at home for students to retain and master the skills. Therefore, we are requesting your help, as parents, to provide your child with opportunities to practice keyboarding at home through the course of the school year.
To support your efforts at home we have collected a few keyboarding resources for you.

In general, there are two types of programs for teaching keyboarding. First, there are many online resources for learning and honing keyboarding skills. The best of these allow the parent to create an account for the student which will track progress and deliver the next lesson as the student progresses. Most of the online resources are free but a few may have a minimal cost…the ones recommended here are free.
The second choice is to purchase or download app/applications for learning keyboarding. These applications will have to be downloaded and installed on your computer or mobile device. Most of the time there will be a cost involved with this that should not exceed about ~$20. There are a few apps that are freeware and can be downloaded without cost.
